Council to lead ‘homeless’ working party
A meeting of key agencies and groups on homelessness in Auckland City resolved to set up a highly focused working party to better co-ordinate research and resources to move positively forward on the issues around people who sleep rough on Auckland City’s streets.
“The police, agencies and church groups are each doing some great work but it is time the wider community took some ownership on the issues. As from today, that’s what we’re going to be doing. We now have some real focus and a co-ordinated direction,” said Auckland City Mayor, Hon John Banks.
“Homeless people are some of the most vulnerable people in our society. These people are ‘soul sick’. We now all agree that we need to collectively draw on our individual expertise and resources to support those like the City Mission which continue to do much work on a shoestring.
“Today’s meeting was a watershed. Auckland City Council’s Law and Order Committee will now be taking a regular and lead role in driving this working party to deliver some tangible outcomes for homeless people and the concerned community,” Mr Banks said.
