Get Creative And Be Entertained At The Nathan Homestead
Manukau residents have the opportunity to explore their creative talents and enjoy a dance extravaganza at upcoming
events being run by Manukau City Council's Arts Services at the Manurewa Community Arts Centre (Nathan Homestead).
A workshop of interest to adults with green fingers, is an 'Introduction to the Art of Bonsai', a one day workshop on
Saturday 29 May, 10am -1pm. Bonsai is a unique art form, not just gardening, and this a not-to-be-missed opportunity to
learn from Bob Langholm, a grand master of bonsai.
With over 40 years experience, Mr Langholm was recently honoured by the Japanese Consulate as an expert. He created
Bonsaiville, a unique Bonsai garden open to the public year-round in Mt Albert, which has been featured on Maggie's
Garden show. Mr Langholm will instruct students on how to shape, prune and care for a bonsai tree, and they will take
away a finished article to enjoy after the workshop.
A real treat for lovers of exotic dancing, a Spanish and Latin Dance Fiesta, will take place on Queen's Birthday
Week-end, Saturday 5 June with one performance only at 3pm. Jane Luscombe, director, has been running a Spanish dance
school in Auckland for over 30 years. The 'Fiesta' concerts provide students with performance opportunities. Ms.
Luscombe has organised a fabulous line up of Spanish Flamenco and other lively Latin American dances such as rumbas and
pasadobles.
This is a great family outing and an opportunity to broaden your cultural experience. The group performed at Otara Music
Arts Centre in March to a great reception. Prices: adults, $10; senior citizens/students, $8; children, $5; and family
concessions, $25. A photo of the group is in Arts is in the City, 2004, page 6.
These events are just an example of the feast of cultural experiences the Manurewa Community Arts Centre offers
throughout the year. Keep active and interested this winter, discover a new hobby, meet new people and keep the winter
blues at bay.
