Settlers' Evening At Lloyd Elsmore Park Leisure Centre
Manukau City Council is pleased to announce they are running a 'Settlers Evening' at the Lloyd Elsmore Park Leisure Centre on the 21st of May for new residents and their families to familiarise themselves with the facility, with a view to increasing their water confidence.
Manukau is one of the most multi cultural cities in New Zealand, and this brings both challenges and rewards. One of the most difficult aspects is communicating with our diverse communities, which this evening aims to do.
The eastern area of Manukau is surrounded by beaches and waterways, and swimming, windsurfing, boating and other aquatic sports are popular pastimes.
New residents from landlocked areas can be unfamiliar with the changing tides, depths and rips experienced in our costal environments. Familiarity in an aquatic environment can reduce the risk of accidents.
Senior Lifeguard Gemma Gillard, who will be running the evening says, "In the eastern part of our city we have a large Asian community who are keen to get involved in community activities, in particular they enjoy swimming in our Council operated pools.
"To cater for this we have staff who are bi-lingual to help them feel more comfortable in this new environment." However, Miss Gillard emphasises the evening is for all groups and encourages all interested residents to attend.
She also adds, "The special evening will not only give new settlers the chance to look around the beautiful renovated facility at their leisure and ask any questions, they will also have the opportunity to have a go at kayaking, snorkelling, learn some safe boating skills or partake in an introductory swimming lesson. In addition to all this they will be able to make use of the spa, sauna and steam room or swim some laps in the new lap pool.
"Promoting year round fitness, water safety and recreational activities through our leisure centres is in keeping with Manukau Leisure Services' policy of providing a variety of health promoting programmes for our residents of all ages and cultures for a healthy, long life".
Manukau City Council is the only Local Body in the region with free entry to swimming pools adding to the attraction of this popular recreational activity. Staff hope to see a large number of residents at the 'New Settlers' evening.
