CMJ Traffic Bulletin: Wednesday 28 April Until Friday 30 April
Stages 1 and 2 of Transit New Zealand’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project continue. There are significant closures affecting motorists over the coming week, these are outlined below.
Note: The closures below for Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 April (8pm to 12midnight) are in addition to those closures announced in the traffic bulletin released on Friday 23 April.
CMJ Stage 1:
Ramp and link closures
Wednesday 28 April – CLOSED - at night from 8pm to 12midnight:
- Gillies Ave on-ramp (SH1 northbound)
Wednesday 28 April – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm to 6am the following morning:
- Symonds St on-ramp (SH1 southbound)
- Khyber Pass off-ramp (SH1 northbound)
- Northwestern to Southern Motorway link (SH16 to SH1 southbound)
Thursday 29 April – CLOSED – at night from 8pm to 12midnight:
- Gillies Ave on-ramp (SH1 northbound)
Thursday 29 April – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm to 6am the following morning:
- Symonds St on-ramp (SH1 southbound)
- Khyber Pass off-ramp (SH1 northbound)
- Northwestern to Southern Motorway link (SH16 to SH1 southbound)
Full motorway closures
- All northbound lanes on the Southern Motorway over the Newmarket Viaduct – CLOSED – from 12midnight through to 4am the following morning on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 April.
Detour: for SH1 northbound traffic - off at Market Rd off-ramp, along Great South Road and Alpers Ave and on at Gillies Ave on-ramp.
Ongoing motorway lane closures
There will also be ongoing north and southbound lane closures at night on the Southern Motorway between the Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps and the Symonds St over-bridge from Sunday through Thursday nights until 2005.
Please choose alternative on- and off-ramps during these closures. Motorists are advised that there could be delays.
The CMJ Project
Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen St over-bridge and Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps and is scheduled for completion in 2005.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond St on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds St and from Wellington St on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds St.
