'Swim 4 Life' to be 'Fit for Life'
Is your fitness level in need of a lift as we approach the winter season? Manukau City Council may have just the answer
for you with the launch of their autumn 'Swim 4 Life Challenge' at the end of April.
Part of a national initiative, the 'challenge', run by Manukau Leisure Services, aims to encourage fitness in the cooler
months, with an attractive programme already trialled successfully at the Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa Leisure Centre.
Marketing Co-ordinator, Philip Dobson says, "We are very excited about the launch of this 10 week anytime/flexitime
initiative citywide at the reasonable cost of $25, which includes a Swim 4 Life T shirt in a choice of 3 colours.
Remember Manukau still practices the policy of free entry to all our pools which keeps the overall costs of running this
kind of programme down.
"There are a number of other incentives including Milestone certificates every 10 km to keep motivation high. A BBQ
Prizegiving will be held at the end of the 'challenge' where spot prizes of sporting goods will be given out. Enrolment
automatically gives participants the chance to win one of five coaching sessions with Howick and Pakuranga elite swim
coach Horst Miehe.
"Promoting year round fitness and recreational activities through our leisure centres is in keeping with Manukau Leisure
Services' policy of promoting a variety of health promoting programmes for our residents of all ages".
Local radio stations, Mai FM, Nui FM and Solid Gold FM, have substantially sponsored this community initiative. It
begins on 26 April at the Lloyd Elsmore Park Leisure Centre, Manurewa Swimming Pool, Otara Leisure Centre, Papatoetoe
Centennial Pools and 10 May at Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa Leisure Centre, due to pool closure.
