CMJ Traffic Bulletin: Saturday 17 April Until Friday 23 April
Stages 1 and 2 of Transit New Zealand’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project continue. There are significant closures affecting motorists over the coming week, these are outlined below:
Ramp and link closures: Saturday 17 April – CLOSED – during the day from 7am to 1pm: Port off-ramp (SH1 northbound) Wellesley Street off-ramp (SH1 northbound)
Sunday 18 April – CLOSED - overnight from 8pm to 6am the following morning: • Symonds Street on-ramp (SH1 southbound) Gillies Ave on-ramp (SH1 northbound) Northwestern Motorway to Southern Motorway link (SH16 to SH1 southbound)
Sunday 18 April – CLOSED – during the day and overnight from 7am on Sunday through to 6am on Monday: Khyber Pass off-ramp (SH1 northbound)
Monday 19 April – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm to 6am the following morning: Symonds Street on-ramp (SH1 southbound) Gillies Ave on-ramp (SH1 northbound) Khyber Pass off-ramp (SH1 northbound) Northwest to Southern Motorway link (SH16 to SH1 southbound)
Monday 19 April – CLOSED – overnight from 10pm to 5am the following morning: Northwestern Motorway to Port link (SH16 portbound)
Tuesday 20 April – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm to 6am the following morning: Symonds Street on-ramp (SH1 southbound) Gillies Ave on-ramp (SH1 northbound) Khyber Pass off-ramp (SH1 northbound) Northwestern to Southern Motorway link (SH16 to SH1 southbound)
Wednesday 21 April – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm to 6am the following morning: Symonds Street on-ramp (SH1 southbound) Khyber Pass on-ramp (SH1 southbound) Gillies Ave off-ramp (SH1 southbound) Gillies Ave on-ramp (SH1 northbound) Khyber Pass off-ramp (SH1 northbound) Northwestern to Southern Motorway link (SH16 to SH1 southbound)
Thursday 22 April – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm to 6am the following morning: Symonds Street on-ramp (SH1 southbound) Khyber Pass on-ramp (SH1 southbound) Gillies Ave off-ramp (SH1 southbound) Gillies Ave on-ramp (SH1 northbound) Khyber Pass off-ramp (SH1 northbound) Northwestern to Southern Motorway link (SH16 to SH1 southbound)
Motorway carriageway blockage: Thursday 22 April and Friday 23 April – BLOCKED – between 1am and 2.30am All southbound lanes on the Southern Motorway over the Khyber Pass Viaduct blocked for up to fifteen minutes between 1am and 2.30am.
Traffic will be held on the motorway during these operations.
Local road closures: Sunday 18 April – CLOSED – during the day and overnight from 7am on Sunday through to 6am on Monday: Khyber Pass Road, near motorway ramps
Monday 19 April to Thursday 22 April – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm to 6am the following morning: Khyber Pass Road, near motorway ramps
Detour routes will be clearly signposted for all closures.
Ongoing closures There will also be ongoing north and southbound lane closures at night on the Southern Motorway between the Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps and the Symonds St over-bridge from Sunday through Thursday nights until 2005.
Please choose alternative on and off-ramps during these closures. Motorists are advised that there could be delays.
The CMJ Project Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen St over-bridge and Gillies Ave on and off-ramps and is scheduled for completion in 2005.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond Street on the NW (SH16) to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds Street and from Wellington Street on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds Street.
