CCC helping appeal to support Niuean rebuilding
With the assistance of Mayor Garry Moore, the Christchurch Niuean Fundraising Committee has obtained and is filling a container to be sent to Niue to aid reconstruction of the Pacific Island state and to help its people rebuild and refurbish their homes.
In January Cyclone Heta destroyed all Niue’s major buildings, including its only hospital. Most homes were severely damaged and many were destroyed.
Since January a great deal of work has been done by the people of Niue and their support groups. They are no longer in need of food or clothing, but must now concentrate on rebuilding their homes. Needed are building materials of any kind, general household furniture and home ware such as towels and linen.
The container will be at the Christchurch City Council’s Linwood Service Centre in Smith Street, on the next two Saturdays (17 April and 24 April), from 9am until 4pm. Fundraising committee members and supporters will be there to accept goods.
