Bus timetable signs to be switched off
Four electronic signs that have been used for nearly seven years to display bus timetable information are to be switched
off and eventually removed.
Three of the signs are located in the central business district, with two on Victoria Street and one on Queen Street,
while the fourth is on Dominion Road near Mt Albert Road.
Denis Mander, Auckland City Council’s principal transport planner, says the old signs may be confusing passengers who
expect them to provide real time information.
The new real time information system uses electronic signs on the street and on buses on the Link route only at this
stage.
The difference is the new system is linked to the buses and provides information on their real arrival times. The old
signs displayed timetable information only and took no account of how traffic was affecting the actual arrival times of
buses at the four stops.
The Auckland City Council’s Transport Committee decided on 7 April to extend the new real time information system across
the city’s bus routes. New electronic signs will be eventually installed at 204 of the 1800 bus stops across the city.
