New parking tariffs to ensure fairness
Auckland City is set to encourage parking fairness in four areas of the central business district (CBD) by ensuring that
the on-street and off-street tariffs are the same.
Until now, those parking at Symonds Street, Upper Queen Street, Sale Street and Franklin Road between 8am and 6pm Monday
to Saturday were being charged lower fees than the surrounding streets.
Auckland City’s parking services manager Mr Chris Geerlings said the reason behind the new tariff is to ensure there’s
fairness in parking prices and to encourage turnover.
“Up until now the parking tariffs around this area haven’t been in line with council policy,” he said. “Due to the
limited number of car parks in the city, there needs to be a consistency between on-street and off-street parking to
encourage fair turnover and to attract more people to visit and park in the CBD.”
These fee changes relate only to the uncovered car parks identified above, and do not include parking buildings owned by
council.
There will also be a new flat fee of $5 from 6pm to 8am for these four car parks.
These new fees will be applied and enforced from Monday 3 May 2004.
