Council Changes Speed Limits In East Tamaki And Mangere
Motorists are advised that Manukau City Council Contractor's Blacktop Construction Ltd have started changing speed limit
signs in Mangere and East Tamaki this week.
Roads affected by the speed limit change are:
" Harris Road, East Tamaki Road, Springs Road in East Tamaki, where all roads will now be 60km/h.
" Massey Road west of Massey Interchange, Kirkbride Road, McKenzie Road, Walmsley Road, Favona Road and a small
section of Coronation Road in Mangere have changed from 50km/h to 60km/h.
" James Fletcher Drive in Mangere will change to 70km/h.
Council's City Traffic Engineer Bruce Conaghan says the new speed limits have been set as part of a citywide plan to
set appropriate speed limits over longer sections of road.
"International experience has shown that by raising the speed limit from 50km/h to 60km/h, the average speed increases
by only 2km/h to 3km/h and not the 10km/h that many perceive. Where speed limits are seen as realistic, motorists are
more likely to comply with the speed limit. Improved compliance with realistic speed limits means that there is a lower
level of enforcement needed which effectively frees the Police to deal with other issues."
