Big turn out expected for creative writing event
A large crowd of Wellingtonians are expected to take part in the first-ever Creative Writing Day at the Karori Wildlife
Sanctuary this Saturday (20 March). This new literary event has attracted a large number of aspiring and published
writers from throughout the region, according to event organiser Keith Lyons.
“There has been an overwhelming response from writers, schoolchildren and those interested in our country’s unique
natural heritage.”
The day will feature free workshops on writing around the Sanctuary, readings from authors and presentations from
storytellers.
“The literary community has gotten behind this event and we’re pleased to offer readings from poets Dinah Hawken, Jenny
Bornholdt, Ron Riddell and John Ansell, along with stories from Tim Jones, Glynne MacLean and Moira Wairama. Strong
support from businesses and organisations means there’s a range of prizes from bookshops, stationery suppliers,
publishers and conservation organisations.”
The aim of the day is to encourage more people to appreciate the place where they live and New Zealand’s distinctive
environment, and then communicate it in writing to others, says Mr Lyons. “The day is about respecting what is special
about New Zealand.”
