Taxis gain space in reshuffle
Taxi drivers are being asked to redo their sums after miscalculating how Auckland City Council’s proposals to reshuffle
taxi parking spaces in the central business district (CBD) will affect the number available.
Council is proposing to close five ranks, a total of 19 spaces, leaving 144 spaces for taxi use during the day. In
addition, the proposal would see 19 new ranks, with a total of 107 spaces, for night use in areas where public demand
for taxis is high.
The proposal will see a net gain of parking spaces for taxis in Auckland’s CBD.
Councillor Greg McKeown confirms the council’s commitment to consult with the Taxi Federation and affected businesses on
the proposal.
“Due to competing uses for the road space, we will need to lose some taxi spaces, but we are working with the federation
to get the right number, in the right locations, to meet public demand,” says Mr McKeown.
The consultation period of the proposal remains open until Tuesday 16 March 2004. A final decision on taxi spaces by the
council is expected by the end of April.
