Eco-Day 2004
Putting it into Practice
March 2003 saw the first city EcoDay – a day of celebrating our 10 years as the first Eco-City in New Zealand.
2004 sees an extension of that focus, with a new venue and new attractions such as the Sustainable Living Centre and the
site of the NOW House. Both these buildings are located in Olympic Park in New Lynn, this is also the home to Ecomatters
Trust, who are at the forefront of ecology and environment initiatives with their Tag Out Trust, Keep Waitakere
Beautiful and Weedfree Trust projects and community programmes and a pinnacle partner in EcoDay.
Last year at Corbans, EcoDay attracted over 30 eco-friendly product exhibitors and high profile seminar speakers on a
sustainable future, and attracted over 3,000 people to the show.
This year, as well as product exhibitors, seminars, free children rides and entertainment, more ecobuses and walking bus
and waterway tours, you get the chance to see products in action. The Day and site coincide with the opening of The
Sustainable Living Centre will show you can make an existing more energy and water efficient and more sustainable. The
new NOW house will have started as well – so you get to see it from the very start of construction – a real ‘how to’.
As Councillor Penny Hulse, Chair of the Council’s Environmental Management Committee says “Our aim is to create a
balance where city growth and the environment are both sustainable”.
