MEDIA RELEASE
10 March 2004
No extra night-time events at Eden Park
The Eden Park Trust Board will not be allowed to hold an extra three non-sporting events at Eden Park each summer. An independent planning hearing committee has refused the resource consent application made by the board.
The board also sought consent for associated temporary structures, event set-up, rehearsal and sound testing and for the use of existing floodlights at the additional night-time events.
The hearing commissioners refused consent on several grounds that are summarised below:
- Eden Park is seen as a sports arena. The addition of non-sporting events at night and the proposed increase in noise levels were likely to result in adverse effects on the surrounding residential neighbourhood
- the conditions proposed had not adequately demonstrated measures that would effectively lessen existing concerns with noise, traffic, parking, crowd management, and the general effect on the surrounding environment
- council was not satisfied the applicant had provided sufficient evidence to determine the nature of any cumulative effects of the additional events or how the applicant would cope with these effects
- council was not satisfied that sufficient evidence had been presented to determine that the noise levels could be moderated and/or complied with to ensure there were no adverse effects on the surrounding residential environment
- the applicant’s proposal was not consistent with the sustainable management purpose and principles of Part II of the Resource Management Act 1991.
The applicant has 15 working days to appeal the finding.
