Proposed new bus lanes for the CBD
– have your say!
Auckland City is calling for the public’s views on several proposed new bus lanes in the central business district
(CBD), which are expected to improve service to the western and northern parts of Auckland.
Council research has shown that the number of morning commuters travelling by bus has increased by approximately 11 per
cent each year for the past five years. The city wants to encourage this trend.
The proposed initiatives include:
- a west-bound bus lane on Fanshawe Street (from Hobson Street to Nelson Street)
- extension of the east-bound bus lanes on Fanshawe Street to Sturdee Street
- a south-bound bus lane on Albert Street (south of Customs Street)
- a north-bound bus lane from Swanson Street to Quay Street
- an east-bound bus lane on Mayoral Drive, from Cook Street to Queen Street
- separate bus and bike lanes (southbound) on Vincent Street.
- either a south-bound bus lane or a wider footpath between Wyndham Street and Victoria Street, opposite the Auckland
District Court.
- a new bus stop on Albert Street, opposite the AA building, to bring buses from the North Shore closer to the midtown
area and reduce walking distances.
The bus lanes would operate between 6am and 10am and 3pm and 7pm. The new initiatives will be implemented in association
with the Auckland Regional Council’s proposed bus route changes for the soon-to-be-built North Shore busway.
The council also wants to upgrade facilities at bus stops and improve pedestrian safety.
