Life through the lens in Manukau
Amateur photographers have the chance to capture places, spaces and occasions that make up the diversity and
personality of life in Manukau City.
The Manukau Arts Photographic Competition is on again, with the theme of 'Tomorrow's Manukau - through today's lens'.
Enter one of six categories - People, Places, Nature, Culture, an Open section and a Junior Open section.
The competition is run by the Manukau City Council. Entry forms have been distributed to all council arts, pools and
recreation centres and libraries as well as to local cafes, service stations and schools. Entries close on Saturday 24
April 2004.
Each section has a prize of $500 except the Junior Open section (13 years and under) for which the prize is two
children's passes to Rainbow's End.
Mayor of Manukau City, Sir Barry Curtis, said the aim of the competition is to encourage Manukau residents to capture on
film images of the city's vibrant communities, culture and natural surroundings.
"They can provide an insight into the distinctive personality of our city," said Sir Barry, "and to capture people's
aspirations of what they want Manukau to be as a place to live now and in the future."
Judges will be looking for photographic creativity and something special, which gives the photograph character and has
an immediate impact on the viewer.
A judging panel will select the top entries which will go on display at Nathan Homestead and then at Mangere Arts
Outreach Centre from Friday 7 May.
Last year's 147 entries greatly impressed the judges. The Supreme Award Winner was Jodi Douglas of Manurewa. Jodi's
winning image, along with the Nature, Open and People category winners feature on this year's entry form.
