Two more "storeys" tell of CBD growth
Auckland City’s Mayor, Hon John Banks will today open the two-storey extension of the Downtown Car park providing 410
extra parking spaces for use by commuters and visitors to the Central Business District (CBD).
The $8 million extension is part of Auckland City’s plans to inject growth and extra vitality to the CBD. The plans
include the 12,000 seat indoor arena, the above-ground development of Britomart and upgrading of Queen and Quay streets.
Recent research undertaken by council indicates a need for more car parks to accommodate the increase in visitors
expected as a result of these planned developments.
It shows that more parking space is also one key to attracting 23 per cent of Aucklanders to visit the CBD more often.
“This Auckland City Council is committed to substantially lifting the prospects of our central business district. If we
want to be a truly successful international city it simply can’t be business as usual,” Mr Banks said.
“This extended Downtown Car park is part of the upgraded commercial infrastructure that will be needed to cope with the
CBD’s projected growth. The number of visitors and residents, and the amount of business transacted, are only going to
increase. Some 32,300 more people will be living in the CBD by 2021. As well as improved public transport, the reality
is we need more carparks.”
The Downtown Car park is one of Auckland City’s largest investments in CBD parking. It is the first of several
developments, which includes extensions to the Victoria Street and Fanshawe Street car parks. A discussion is also
underway on building a further car park as part of the Britomart above-ground development.
Mr Banks will travel to the 10.30 am opening event on the car park’s new top floor in MOTAT’s oldest vehicle – the
International buggy. The car is similar to a horseless carriage.
