Funding Available for Crime Prevention in Manukau
Manukau City Council's Community Safety Committee today approved the release of $123,000 for crime prevention
initiatives in the city.
The funding was included in Council's Crime Prevention Action Plan which was adopted in December 2003.
Committee Chairman Cr Barry Keon says that due to time constraints it was decided to allocate the funding through
one-off grants.
"The budget is available in this financial year and so we must have it allocated by 30 June. Crime and safety issues are
a priority for Council, therefore the grants will be made available to existing community groups and service providers
operating within Manukau City. We want the successful applicants to be able to immediately make a difference in the
community, on the ground," he says.
The grants are: up to $60,000 for youth justice initiatives targeting children, youth at risk and young offenders; up to
$10,000 for Maori crime prevention initiatives; and up to $18,000 for family and/or anti- violence programmes.
Request for Expressions of Interest up to the value of $25,000 will be called for developing Crime Prevention Through
Environmental Design guidelines.
A further contract of up to $10,000 will also be available for a Maori Warden pilot project targeting licensee
compliance with the Sale of Liquor Act.
Safety Planner Helena Maxwell says that the one off grants and contracts for services will soon be open for application.
" We will be advertising these grants and contracts through newspapers and on Council’s website by March. The
applications will be assessed later in that month with final approval by the Community Safety Committee in April."
Other funded initiatives in the Crime Prevention Action Plan include the continuation of existing Closed Circuit TV
cameras, the installation of a new CCTV site, community grants allocated by the Safer Manukau team, and an Immediate
Response Fund.
