Cash for creativity
Auckland City is now inviting applications for its next round of Creative Communities funding.
Round One opens on 9 February 2004 and closes on 26 March 2004. It is open to arts-related projects taking place between
15 June 2004 and 30 June 2005.
Individuals or art groups can apply for arts funding for projects that either:
- increase participation in the arts
- increase the range and diversity of the arts available to communities, or
- enhance and strengthen the local arts sector.
All projects must benefit residents of Auckland City.
For example, the Turning Mobility project was a successful recipient last year. Tim Turner, project manager, says: “It
would have been really difficult to continue the project without the Creative Communities funding assistance. Turning
Mobility is about helping the community understand and accept disabled people through art. Disability and art are really
quite similar. In both cases you want to be accepted whether it’s for who you are or what you’ve created. Our art
exhibition, in which 60 per cent of the artists involved have some form of disability, creates an opportunity for
disabled people to express who they are and what they can do. Being able to undertake this project has made me realise
my worth and that I’m capable of helping others. It has also helped me apply for further funding for a disability arts
performance which will be part of the Giant Leap Festival, Dec 2004 at Aotea Centre.”
A series of public information sessions will be held in March, and these will be advertised in City Scene and local
newspapers.
