Council praises people’s water conservation efforts
Christchurch residents’ efforts to conserve water have worked well with water volumes pumped from city artesian wells
dropping about 20%, says City Water and Waste Manager, Mike Stockwell.
Water pumped from artesian wells for city use had dropped up to 20% since the water conservation advertising campaign
started about 10 days ago, he said.
While this may also be due to the cooler weather, people were definitely making a big effort to conserve precious water,
Mr Stockwell says.
There has been a noticeable drop in hoses left on and water running to waste down footpaths and side channels, but Mr
Stockwell urges residents to continue conservation measures. Levels in extraction wells are still very low and will take
a normal winter of rainfall to replenish fully.
Mr Stockwell says people need to continue their waterwise habits to avoid pressure drops and the need for restrictions
if another long hot spell emerges in February.

On Tuesday 27 January when it rained, City water consumption was 127 million litres, i.e. down from a high of 300
million litres on 16 December.
