Major Sewer Upgrade work continues
Pipe-laying work for the new Pressure Main No 11 being carried out by the City Council as part of its $36 million Major
Sewer Upgrade programme is nearing the next stage, taking the pipeline from Hay Street across Linwood Avenue to Linwood
Park.
This pipeline will eventually take the city’s wastewater from a new pumping station, to be built at the corner of Bass
and Randolph streets, Linwood, to the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant. It is one of 14 different reticulation
upgrade projects to be completed citywide by 2010.
Major Sewer Upgrade project manager, Graham Williams, says work is planned to start in Linwood Avenue about late
February reaching Linwood Park by mid-March. The aim is to have the Linwood Park leg of the work completed by the end of
April in the period between summer and winter sports.
Mr Williams says that high traffic volumes on Linwood Avenue means work will be carried out during off-peak hours,
sometimes in the evenings. The work to date is running to schedule.
The Council has also lodged resource consent applications for the new pumping station in Randolph Street. Tenders for
building the pumping station should be called about June or July for work to begin about October, he says.

Background on the Major Sewer Upgrade
The Major Sewer Upgrade programme is the Council’s 10-year effort to upgrade the city’s wastewater reticulation system
at a cost of $36 million to provide greater capacity and reduce the amount of wastewater overflow into the Heathcote and
Avon rivers.
The programme includes some 14 different projects to be carried out citywide, to lay about 30km of new pipelines.
