Manukau considers options for supporting Niue
As home to the largest number of Niueans in New Zealand, Manukau City Council will be considering a range of options for
supporting its cyclone victims at its meeting on 29 January 2004.
Sir Barry Curtis, Mayor of Manukau, today said that Council will look at providing storage space for donated supplies
and will also assess whether council staff can provide any of the expertise that is needed to help rebuild Niue.
“I will also be asking the Council to make a financial donation such as Manukau always has done when the islands of the
Pacific have suffered from natural disaster,” says Sir Barry.
Niueans make up approximately 7,000 of Manukau’s 72,000 Pacific Island residents.
Sir Barry Curtis extended his deepest sympathy to Premier Vivian, the government and people of Niue.
“I am saddened to hear of the loss of life, injuries and the destruction of services that the Niuiean people have
experienced as a result of Cyclone Heta,” says Sir Barry. "Council will do whatever it can to support our island
neighbours."
