Free swimming lessons on offer in Manukau
Manukau City Council is encouraging residents to swim safely this summer by offering a free introductory lesson at their
pools.
The free sessions will run from 27 to 31 January at Council’s Moana-Nui-â-Kiwa Leisure Centre (Mangere), Manurewa
Leisure Centre, Papatoetoe Centennial Pool, and Otara Leisure Centre. All classes use the Swimsation coaching programme.
Leisure Manager, Brett Jude says that each pool has set times on selected days with classes for pre-schoolers, school
age and adults. All participants will receive a $5 leisure voucher that can be deducted from the cost of Term One swim
lessons.
Statistics from Water Safety New Zealand show that around 130 people drown each year. Ten people drowned during the
official holiday period, 4pm Christmas eve until 8am on 5 January 2004. Most of these drownings were avoidable. Six of
the 10 victims were swimming, two were scuba diving, one was fishing and there was one immersion accident.
"Our sessions are all about providing an opportunity for the local community to become more confident and safe in the
water. We want people to come and have a go, and see how much fun it can be learning to swim. Last year 200 people took
advantage of the free offer,” says Mr Jude.
“Swimming is a core life skill that everyone should have. We hope that our free sessions will encourage people to move
onto full swimming lessons.”
