Significant opportunities for all councils in new transport package
For immediate release on 12 December 2003
The new package of transport measures announced by the Government today provide significant opportunities for all councils and Transit New Zealand to develop effective transport systems, says Local Government New Zealand President Basil Morrison.
“We welcome these proposals and believe that they will enable the quality of the transport network to be lifted considerably throughout the country over the next 10 years.
“We will be urging both regional councils and territorial authorities to respond to this challenge laid down by the Government and to take advantage of the significant opportunities on offer.
“It is also of considerable significance that the Government has committed to reducing the diversion of funds that is raised from fuel taxes and Road User Charges. We welcome this extra funding into transport,” said Mr Morrison.
