Viewing Room Opens at Manukau Memorial Gardens
The Manukau Memorial Gardens’ new Magnolia Room was blessed at a special ceremony on Tuesday this week (2 December).
Mayor Sir Barry Curtis says that New Zealand is now very much a multi cultural society.
"Nowhere is this reflected more than in Manukau one of the most culturally diverse cities in New Zealand. Manukau City Council advocates strongly on behalf of all its people, and acknowledges the diversity in traditions and beliefs of its many cultural communities.
"We are pleased to be able to provide the opportunity for mourners at the Manukau Memorial Gardens, to ‘witness the charge’, a tradition considered very important to many cultures. The new Magnolia Room, where the initial stage of cremation can be viewed, will assist in meeting the cultural and religious needs of many of our people," he says.
Construction of the Magnolia Room included an exterior ramped pathway for disabled access, new entry porch and improvements to the premises for installation of new cremation equipment.
The new viewing room and investment in modern equipment is one further step in the continued growth and development of Manukau Memorial Gardens. Plans to extend the cemetery by developing adjoining land are currently being discussed with the community.
