Council Buys Land In Puhinui
Manukau City Council has agreed to purchase a 57.6 hectare (144 acre) block of land in Puhinui for $4.72 million. The land is on Prices Rd, Manurewa, next to Puhinui Reserve and has been purchased for open space reserve.
It has frontages to the Manukau harbour and will be an extension of the Puhinui Reserve, making it the largest park in Manukau City. It is also being considered for use as the site of the annual Rally of New Zealand which has until now been staged on land in Manukau City Centre where a new road is being built. State highway 20 is being extended to link up with the southern motorway beside Rainbow’s End.
The Puhinui site was identified some time ago under the Council’s overarching parks strategy, Making Connections, as a desirable long term purchase.
Mayor Sir Barry Curtis says,” It is a superb site and fits the needs of our growing population. The land gives us many more options for management and use of Puhinui Reserve. It will provide better access and car parking and a bigger recreation and events area which will take pressure off the sensitive conservation areas elsewhere in the reserve.”
