Christchurch City Council hosting end-of-year cycle seminar
A seminar about cycling is being hosted by the Christchurch City Council at 5.40pm on Tuesday, 2 December. The seminar
is in the ground floor Council chambers on Tuam Street.
Councillor Chrissie Williams says the city is known nationally for its cycle expertise and initiative. The seminar is an
opportunity for anyone interested in cycling to hear about some of the progress being made in the city.
"Christchurch is recognised nationally as leading in our cycle planning, promotions and provision of infrastructure," Cr
Williams says. "At the NZ Cycling Conference 2003 held in Auckland in October a quarter of the presentations were from
Christchurch people." Three presentations - by Glen Koorey, Michael Blyleven and Axel Wilkie -- made at the Auckland
conference will be repeated at the seminar on Tuesday. Speakers will also talk about a the Velocity International
conference, held in Paris in September.

- Mike Blyleven (Transport Policy Analyst, ECan) "Go smarter in Christchurch" --Increasing cycling numbers through
travel plan implementation
- Glen Koorey (Technical and Policy Advisor, Cycling Advocates Network) "Why a cycling strategy on its own will not
increase cycling" -- How local authorities can really make a difference.
- Axel Wilke (City Solutions, CCC) "Velocity International Conference and European Study Tour" -- Experiences at the
conference and a study tour through Germany and the Netherlands -- sharing insights into how some cities have
incorporated the needs of cyclists in their urban form and function.
