Tamaki campus development notified
A district plan change that would allow the University of Auckland’s Tamaki campus to develop in partnership with the
private sector is being notified on Sunday (23 November).
Proposed plan change 97 would enable research institutes and business to move onto university land, so the campus could
develop as an integrated educational and research centre.
Dubbed an innovation park, the arrangement would allow the private and public partners to benefit from sharing their
knowledge and resources.
“The integrated public-private model is common overseas and has the potential to act as a catalyst in attracting more
knowledge industries to the adjacent area,” says Professor Ralph Cooney, the Pro Vice Chancellor Tamaki of Auckland
University.
The concept plan has been amended from a university campus for 7000 students to now provide for the development of a
‘research integration campus’ with 6000 students and the co-location of public and private partners.
“Although the proposal has been adopted as a public plan change, the university will cover the costs of public
consultation,” says Karen Bell, Manager Isthmus & Island Resource Management, Auckland City.
The university in close consultation with council staff prepared the plan change.
“The council agreed to adopt the proposal as a public plan change because it believes the development of an integrated
education and research facility in Tamaki is consistent with our urban living programme as well as being in the public’s
best interest,” said Ms Bell.

Any person can make a submission on a plan change, if they wish to be heard they must state that on their submission.
