New garden seat in memory of Commander Brewerton R.N
Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore will tomorrow dedicate a new garden seat to Commander Howard Cuthbert Brewerton R.N, at the Council’s Brougham Village housing complex.
Commander Brewerton RN lived at Brougham Village for 25 years, before he passed away in 2000. As Commander in the British Royal Navy, he served on the Shropshire patrolling the Atlantic Ocean during World War 2. Commander Brewerton immigrated to New Zealand in 1952 and practiced as a dentist in Geraldine before moving to Christchurch in 1970.
Joan Buck, daughter of the late Commander Brewerton, says that her father loved living at Brougham Village, where the community atmosphere reminded him of villages in England.
“The seat dedication is a wonderfully appropriate tribute to him. He loved plants and gardens, and had a lot of pot plants on his patio at Brougham Village”, said Mrs Buck.
Commander Brewerton was well known by his neighbours and community. He was affectionately called Father Christmas by his fellow tenants at Brougham Village, because of his big beard.
The dedication coincides with a City Housing barbeque and games afternoon for tenants of Brougham Village, Cecil Courts, Tommy Taylor Courts and Waltham Courts in celebration of Neighbourhood Week.
This year, Neighbourhood Week is being held in Christchurch from November 1-7. Carole Anderton, City Councillor and Chair of the Housing Sub-committee, agrees that Neighbourhood Week events provide great opportunities for getting to know the people who live closest to you.
“You can’t get much closer to your neighbours than living in an adjoining flat, so City Housing is making the most of Neighbourhood Week by organising several celebrations around Christchurch for its tenants”.
More than 2,600 tenants live in low-cost Council housing in Christchurch. There are 113 housing complexes located around the city. City Housing is a self-financing unit within the City Council, which does not use ratepayers funds to operate.
