Celebrating five years of Christchurch’s commitment to road safety

Christchurch Road Safety Strategy on Friday 31 October at the Civic Offices.

The celebration has been organised by the Road Safety Co-ordinating Committee to celebrate the implementation of the
Road Safety Strategy and the myriad of successful road safety initiatives Christchurch has seen over the last five
years. These initiatives demonstrate the commitment of organisations to contribute to road safety at a local level, and
what can be achieved by working together.
Background: The Road Safety Coordinating committee, the first of its kind in New Zealand, was set up in 1989 to address
road safety issues at a community level. Its initial success made it a model for similar committees that are now in
operation nationally. Over 15 local and national organisations are represented on the committee and have been involved
in the hard work and challenges of the various road safety campaigns and initiatives held over the years, all in a bid
to help make the roads safer for our children and communities.
