Mangere by-election candidates announced
Nominations for the Mangere by-election beginning in November/December have closed with 4 people registering their
willingness to stand for the vacant Council position.

The nomination period ran from 24 September closing noon 22 October.
“Mangere ward is more diverse than many people imagine and it is pleasing to see the nominations received reflect that
diversity,” Electoral Officer, John Skelton said today.
Now that the nomination period is closed electoral officials have a small window in which to prepare the voting
documents and candidate profile statements. First trialled in 2001 the statements are a valuable resource for voters
making their decision about who to vote for.
“Voting in local government elections is an important part of living in a community. The people elected have the ability
to shape the way communities grow and develop. It is important that people living in a community have confidence in
their representative.”
“People seem to forget that local government has a greater effect on their day-to-day lives than central government,” Mr
Skelton said. “It is about participating in the decision-making regarding their community; its parks, footpaths and
general look and feel.”
Registered electors in the Mangere Ward will begin receiving their voting papers for the postal ballot from 19 November
and will have until noon, 11 December to return them to the Council.
All those living in the Mangere Ward, and who are on the general or Maori electoral rolls, are eligible to vote. If
people are eligible but are not enrolled they are still able to vote if they register at any Post Shop and come into
Council to cast a special vote during the voting period.
