Artist sought for Addington sculpture
Artists interested in designing and constructing a sculpture for a small Addington reserve are being invited to register their interest with the Christchurch City Council.
The sculpture will be part of a new landscape plan for the reserve on the corner of Lyttelton St and Lincoln Rd.
As yet un-named, the site is historically significant for a number of reasons including the fact that it is important to Maori as a former mahinga kai area (place to gather food) and is well known for its mokihi, a special raupo canoe that was used in a former nearby stream.
The reserve was also once part of the Waimakariri River and home to Nairns Nursery It has also contained a car yard and is in the same vicinity as Addington Raceway and the Showgrounds.
When the artists’ registrations of interest have been received, between two and five of them will be shortlisted and invited to develop a conceptual design or designs. A single design will be selected from these to be constructed by the artist.
The project selection team will include the Council’s Maori arts advisor Paula Rigby, the Council’s Beckenham community advocate Barbara Ford and representatives from local residents groups, business groups and interested organisations.
To register their interest, artists should submit a portfolio of their work to Maori Arts Advisor Paula Rigby, C/- Christchurch City Council, P.O.Box 237, Christchurch. These must be received by 5pm on 7 November.
