Council creates new Botany ward
At an extended extraordinary meeting to discuss the Review of Membership last week Manukau City councillors resolved to amend the initial proposal to provide a council of 24 councillors including the Mayor.
Included in the resolved proposal is:
- A new ward to be called Botany
- The East Tamaki industrial area to be included in the Botany ward,
- The Mangere/Papatoetoe ward boundary will be aligned along Massey Road with the exception of Walter Massey Park which will remain in the Mangere ward, and
- Minor adjustments to the proposed Botany/Clevedon boundary to better reflect the rural community of Clevedon.
The number of elected Community Board members will be reduced to 5 in each ward except for the Manurewa ward which will have 6. All elected Councillors will be appointed to their respective ward’s Community Boards.
During the Review process 47 submissions were received with 20 submitters choosing to present to the Council personally.
The proposal will be publicly notified within the week. Written objections and appeals from submitters are invited from this time. If any are received, the proposal and the objections and appeals will be forwarded to the Local Government Commission for determination. The Commission must make the binding determination by early April next year.
If no objections or appeals are received, the resolution will stand and will become effective for the 2004 Local Government Elections in October next year.
