Greater Wellington Welcomes Land Transport Bill
“It’s great to see it,” was the response of the Chairperson of the Greater Wellington Regional Council, Margaret
Shields, to the news that the Land Transport Management Bill has been reported back to Parliament from select committee.
“The bill gives us some of the tools we need to start solving some of the major transport problems facing the region. To
build vital projects like Transmission Gully we will need some of the funding mechanisms this bill allows – such as road
tolls and public – private partnerships.”
Ms Shields said that all the councils from the region would want to meet soon to discuss the implications of the bill.
“The new bill strengthens the focus on regional planning for all forms of transport infrastructure, including road and
rail. The local authorities in the greater Wellington region already have a co-ordinated land transport strategy, and
we’re anxious to make progress but what we have lacked is the funding mechanisms to make it happen. I hope we can meet
soon to discuss the implications of the bill, and go through the details with a fine tooth comb.”
