Newmarket first to fly commercial banners
Auckland’s City Development Committee resolved today to allow a trial to place commercial advertising on cross street
and pole banners along the Newmarket main street.
Currently the Signs Bylaw enables the council to approve banners flown over public footpaths and carriageways however,
this would be the first time commercial advertising would be allowed.
The Newmarket trial will be carried out under a number of conditions including:
advertising will only be allowed for shop names, sales and events related to Newmarket, not product advertising
advertising will be restricted to the three existing banner sites in Newmarket one week in four will be set aside for
non-commercial advertising all banners are to be erected and taken down in compliance to council regulations.
A review of the trial will take place and reported back to council in April 2004.
“Our review will take feedback from both the business community and public to ensure a balanced view is taken into
account before any permanent policy change,” says Councillor Juliet Yates, Chairperson City Development Committee.
