Auckland sport gets major funding boost
Auckland City will provide an additional $2.3 million for Auckland Netball’s major new citywide netball venue. The
decision reinforces Auckland City’s commitment to quality open spaces and recreation, according to Councillor Scott
Milne, chairperson of the Recreation and Events Committee.
The $12 million project will include more than 50 netball courts and is another major boost for the rapidly developing
Tamaki area. The complex will include clubrooms, 46 outdoor and eight indoor courts and 840 car parks. It brings the
council’s contribution to the project to $6 million.
The city’s commitment comes after extensive consultation with netball in Auckland, Mr Milne says.
”It’s an exciting project - netball deserves the support,” says Mr Milne. “It is a huge amount of money but this is an
intergenerational investment. The Silver Ferns are the new world champions and Auckland is proud to be providing
facilities to grow and support participation and the excellence of our sportspeople.”
Netball is the most popular female sport in Auckland, with more than 284,000 participants.
The project will see Auckland Netball moving from Windmill Park, Mt Eden, to Ngahue Reserve, Glen Innes.
