Wellesley St taxi rank to be relocated
Due to the current road works project on Wellesley Street East, to connect the Grafton Gully access to the city, an existing taxi rank on Wellesley Street East is to be moved to Wellesley Street West.
The new location has been previously identified by taxi drivers as a preferred site for a taxi rank.
The current taxi rank is on the south side of Wellesley Street East, between Lorne Street and Mayoral Drive. The new temporary taxi rank is to be located on the north side of Wellesley Street West between Queen and Elliot Streets, outside Smith & Caughey. Space for seven taxis will be allocated - the same number as on the existing stand.
Permanent locations for taxi ranks in the area will be determined through consultation with the taxi companies and New Zealand Taxi Federation.
Temporary signage will mark the new site from the changeover on Wednesday 17 September.
In a further move to provide taxi rank space in high demand areas at night, the existing 8am to 6pm loading zone on Wellesley Street West (next to the new temporary taxi stand) will become a taxi stand after 6pm.
