Feedback wanted on Manukau's Safety & Crime Prevention Plans
Public feedback is now being sought on Manukau City Council's draft Community Safety Strategy and draft Crime Prevention
Action Plan.
"Safety and crime are major issues for the people of Manukau," says Mayor Sir Barry Curtis. "Council's citizen survey
gave us strong indications of the community's concern. Council is working with other agencies such as Counties Manukau
Police and Safer Manukau to create a safer city for all.
"Council's contribution to this work includes a Community Safety Strategy of which the Crime Prevention Action Plan is a
part," Sir Barry says.
Community Safety Planner, Helena Maxwell, says that public interest exceeded expectations. "Over 400 people attended 19
public meetings, and we received 244 responses to the Crime & Safety Survey Questionnaire. Our meetings included representatives of community groups, residents & ratepayers, Maori, Pacific Island people, new settlers and youth."
Priority crime issues identified were dishonesty crimes, health safety, anti-social behaviour, the justice system and
youth justice.
The priority community safety issues identified were environmental safety, road safety, health safety, youth safety,
family safety, and dishonesty crimes.
The draft strategies have been developed based on community priorities (from the meetings and surveys) and an analysis
of relevant statistical information.
The Community Safety Strategy aims to unite Council activities that contribute to community safety in Manukau. The Crime
Prevention Action Plan outlines Council’s direction and role in crime prevention within the city. The draft documents
are available from 11 September, from Council’s website at www.manukau.govt.nz/crime.htm or Council’s Call Centre on
(09) 262 5104. Submissions close on the 10th October 2003.
