gMoaih artwork to be unveiled in Christchurch on 2 September
gMoaih, a stone sculpture by Rapa Nui (Easter Island) sculptor Tebo, will be officially unveiled at the Arts Centre on
Hereford Street at 4.30pm on Tuesday, 2 September.
The work is a gift to the city from Chilean Ambassador Carlos Appelgren Balbontin to mark 30 years of bilateral
relations between Chile and New Zealand.
Last year, the official Chilean National Day festivities (18 September) were celebrated in Christchurch, part of the
Chilean week in Christchurch. It was the first time they had taken place outside Wellington.
During that week the sculptor Tebo began carving gMoaih. The goal was to create a gift to the city that would be an
emblem of the links between the two countries.
œ Reporters and photographers wishing to cover the Moai unveiling are welcome to attend.
