‘Right plant, right place’ says Parks, Gardens and Waterways Chairperson
Recent publicity about what trees should be allowed to grow along the Avon River in the central city is timely and
reinforces the need for a planned planting strategy for Christchurch, says Parks, Gardens and Waterways Committee
Chairperson Carole Anderton.
“This is not about natives versus exotics. It’s about good design, and the most appropriate planting for a particular
setting. All the best features of the Garden City are enhanced by the use of the right plants in the right place.”
“Christchurch people are great at debating this sort of thing. The central city landscape is a very important issue and
hopefully the Council and residents can work together to put in place a plan that serve the city well for decades to
come,” says Cr Anderton.
A study of the themes of the Avon River in the central city was recently completed by Council staff. Based on public
consultation, it features an analysis of the landscape character along the river, and identifies areas that need to be
protected and enhanced. A tree assessment and trout spawning survey are also included.
Copies of this character analysis are available from Our City or Civic Offices or by phoning 941 8490. Further feedback
is welcome and will go towards a strategy and design guide that should be out in the next few months.
