Comments welcomed on revised Grey Lynn Park plan
Local residents are invited to comment on Auckland City’s plans for the long term development of Grey Lynn Park.
Auckland City aims to improve Grey Lynn Park as a local recreation area and the latest plan will guide any future development. The plan builds on and enhances existing features and creates new recreational and leisure opportunities.
In 2001 the Western Bays Community Board funded a needs assessment study of the park which led to a draft development concept plan. Two options were presented for public comment and the latest plan takes into account the comments received during this consultation process.
Western Bays Community Board Chair, Catherine Hawley, says the Grey Lynn Park Advisory Group, park users and the wider local community have been involved in developing the plan.
“Local input into the plan is vital for its success and acceptance. Grey Lynn Park is a special place and a focal point for the surrounding community. It must also meet the long-term needs of a broad range of park users so we want to hear from them all,” says Ms Hawley.
“However, people need to know that implementation of the various proposals will be staged over time and will be dependent on funding availability.” she says.
If the latest plan is actioned, the main Williamson Avenue and Dryden Street entrances would be designed to strengthen the ‘sense of arrival’ into the park. There would be additional planting in particular areas and a semi-dry wetland is proposed near the Williamson Avenue entrance. Walkways would be upgraded and new paths created along the western boundary to provide an all-weather path right around the park.
New picnic and barbeque areas would be installed along with new toilets and park furniture. The area around the paddling pool would be upgraded with its own toilet and changing rooms. The playground near Grosvenor Street would also be improved.
Over time it is intended that the former athletics clubroom near Elgin Street would be demolished and a new multi-purpose building constructed near the existing rugby league club building. The new building would contain new clubrooms, changing rooms, public toilets and multi-use rooms.
There would be more carparking provided along Dryden Street, and the Elgin Street carparks would have lockable gates.
Copies of the plan are on display at the Grey Lynn Library and the Grey Lynn Community Centre during normal opening hours until 18 August, along with comment forms.
Information signs detailing the plan will also be placed on the park. On Saturday 2 August, from 11am to 3pm, an open day will be held on the park near the Elgin Street entrance, near the former athletics clubrooms building.
More information on this project including a copy of the plan and an online comment form are available on the Auckland City website www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/greylynnpark.
The deadline for comments is Monday, 18 August.
