Watch for new layout on Southern Motorway
Transit New Zealand advises all motorists that there will be changes to the layout of southbound lanes on the Southern Motorway between the Khyber Pass on-ramp and the Gillies Ave off-ramp from Monday 28 July.
In effect, the lanes are “shuffling” over to the east by one lane. Watch out for the changed road markings.
The following closures will be in place on Sunday 27 July to allow for preparation work to take place in the area:
- The Khyber Pass on-ramp (southbound) will be closed to all traffic from 7am on Sunday 27 July to 6am on Monday 28 July.
- There will be southbound lane closures between the Khyber Pass on-ramp and the Gillies Ave off-ramp between 11pm on Sunday 27 July and 6am on Monday 28 July to allow for lanes to be re-marked. During this time there will be one lane open to traffic at all times.
From Monday morning, the layout of the southbound lanes will have changed, there will still be four lanes open to traffic but the outside lane will move onto the existing shoulder of the road. Motorists should take care when driving through the area and watch out for changes to road markings.
The closures and subsequent changes are weather permitting and in the event of bad weather, work will be postponed until the next clear night.
A number of other closures of on and off-ramps, motorway lanes, and local streets are also in place and motorists travelling in the area should be aware of the following changes.
- The northbound shoulder between Gillies Ave on-ramp and Khyber Pass off-ramp is closed until early 2004.
- The layout of the Gillies Ave on-ramp (northbound) has been changes, reducing the ramp to one lane.
- Almorah Road (a local road that runs parallel to the motorway) is closed to all through traffic until the end of the year to allow access to the motorway construction site.
- The left hand shoulder on the Wellesley Street and Port off-ramps (northbound) from the Southern Motorway is closed until the end of the year to allow for work under the Southern Motorway to take place.
- The State Highway 16 connections to and from the Port and Grafton Gully remain reduced to one lane until January 2005. These closures are required to allow access to structures under the Southern Motorway.
- The Khyber Pass on-ramp (southbound) will be closed regularly at night until mid 2004.
- There will be ongoing north and southbound lane closures at night on the Southern Motorway between the Gillies Ave on and off-ramps and the Symonds Street over bridge until 2005. During these closures, at least one lane in each direction will remain open to traffic.
- There will be ongoing night closures of sections of Khyber Pass Road and Boston Road (from 9pm until 6pm) until mid-2004.
Temporary barriers and cones will be located in all areas, and motorists at advised that there may be delays
Stage 1 of the Central Motorway Junction upgrade project covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen Street over bridge and Gillies Ave on and off-ramps, and is scheduled for completion in 2005.
