Dr Bruce Hucker, Chair of the Shareholders’ Representative Group (SRG) for Auckland Regional Transport Network Ltd (ARTNL), has reacted positively to the direction provided by Dr Cullen in a letter received last night.
ARTNL is a company established by six of the seven local Councils to hold and develop the rail corridors and ferry terminals on behalf of the region. North Shore City Council is not a shareholder but takes an active interest in the affairs of the company.
ARTNL has made good progress towards improving ferry terminals but has been held back on rail developments by delays in achieving agreement with the ARC on arrangements for management and development of the rail corridors, said Dr Hucker.
This has been complicated in recent times by the various bids for acquisition of Tranzrail and the Government’s desire to re-acquire control of the national rail network.
“I am pleased that Dr Cullen has provided some clarity as to the government’s intentions and roles of the respective parties”, said Dr Hucker.
Dr Cullen’s letter unlocks Infrastructure Auckland’s funds for urgent improvements to stations and the corridor. Safety, lighting, security and signage are the first priority.
“I am confident that ARTNL will be able to move quickly to undertake the necessary work which will shortly include upgraded stations at Manurewa, Glen Innes and Ranui” said Dr Hucker.
“Dr Cullen’s letter also provides a basis for parties involved with rail in the Auckland region to move forward in a cohesive manner”.
