City Design appoints first CEO
Barry Potter has been appointed as the first chief executive of City Design Limited, a company wholly owned by Auckland
City Council.
Mr Potter has extensive experience in engineering and management in New Zealand and overseas.
He was a director of Carson Group Project Managers and his most recent role was as Project Director for a significant
broadband wireless access project.
His recent experience includes eight years as Director Facilities Group for Meritec Ltd where he led a company division
comprising about 100 engineers, architects and managers. He has considerable experience in consulting
architecture/engineering management and business development. He has also led design teams on large infrastructure and
institutional projects in New Zealand, Australia, SouthEast Asia, South America and the Pacific. These projects have
included 400MW combined cycle power stations, a timber processing plant, hospitals, multi-storey buildings, sporting and
cultural facilities, cyclone damage reinstatement projects, and road and civil infrastructure works. Mr Potter holds a
BE degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Auckland, a MBA from Massey University and is a Member of
Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand.
City Design Limited is professional services consultancy specialising in engineering, architecture and planning of urban
infrastructure. City Design’s board has been planning the new CEO role for nearly a year in a bid to drive greater
growth for the firm. Mr Potter took up his appointment on 1 July 2003.
