Jasmax Backgrounder
Jasmax has changed the face of Auckland central in the past ten years.
With the architectural practice’s work on significant public and private buildings, Jasmax has carried the torch for
exceptional design, superb quality interiors and people friendly amenities.
The firm has:
- conserved and restored Auckland’s 1911 Town Hall, providing Aucklanders with an elegant civic building and acclaimed
acoustic venue for concerts and performances. The Town Hall won the NZIA Northern Regional Design Award in 1999 and the
Property Council of New Zealand Excellence Award.
- Refurbished, adapted (for live theatre) and preserved the unique, world renowned Civic Theatre. This has returned to
Aucklanders a marvellous, elaborate performance space and function areas, to the highest standards.
The building won the Best Design Award (Hospitality) in 2001, the NZIA Regional Award for Architecture in the same year;
and the Property Council of New Zealand Excellence Award.
- designed and built a curvaceous, commanding Hotel and Restaurant Studies Building, for AUT, on the corner of Wellesley
Street and Mayoral Drive, complete with magnificent ‘Navigator’ sculpture by Brett Graham. This won the 1997 NZIA
Regional Award and the Property Council of New Zealand Special Purpose Category – Excellence Award.
- Designed and is in the process of building the Acute Services Building on the Auckland Hospital site.
The privately owned firm is also known for its design of Te Papa, Wellington.
Highly experienced in public architecture – and with a wide variety of experience in all aspects of design and
architecture including premier New Zealand residences – the Jasmax team has over 140 staff in Auckland and Wellington.
The practice is committed to a vision of New Zealand architecture, founded in the Pacific and infused with the unique
cultural elements of Maori heritage.
