All aboard for a trip down memory lane
Councillor Bill Christian, chairperson of Auckland City Council’s works committee is calling on Aucklanders to check their memory banks and, if they were a passenger on the last passenger train to leave the old Auckland railway station in 1930, to get in touch with him.
On Sunday, 16 November 1930, the last scheduled passenger service left the old Auckland railway station at the bottom of Queen Street.
To celebrate the railway’s return to downtown Auckland after an absence of 73 years, Mr Christian is putting together an excursion for passengers on that last train in 1930 to travel on the first train out of the new Britomart in 2003.
The excursion will leave the Britomart at 6:10am on Monday, 7 July bound for Papakura, for breakfast at a local eatery. The return journey will depart Papakura later that morning. Councillor Bill Christian’s phone numbers are; ph 025 814 721 or (09) 527 8648
