Agreement sought on McFarlane Park skate facility
A community workshop is planned for local people to debate and reach some agreement on the skate facility proposed for
McFarlane Park in Shirley.
Neighbouring residents and business people are invited by the Council to a public workshop to be held on Wednesday 25
June, 7-9pm at Emmett St Christian Centre, 106 Emmet Street, Shirley.
Parks & Waterways Area Advocate Kirsty Patten says that recent consultation shows the community is split on the proposal. While
there was a recognised demand for leisure activities for young people in the Shirley area, some neighbouring residents
do not support the idea of a skate facility in McFarlane Park.
“The workshop is an opportunity to resolve the issue,” says Kirsty Patten. “We will present four different options for
discussion: relocating the facility to somewhere else in the area; having a temporary trial in McFarlane Park; building
a smaller facility, or going ahead and constructing it as proposed. Hopefully a recommendation can be agreed upon which
can then be taken to the community board for a final decision.”
