Celebrating Matariki (Maori New Year)
A programme of Maori events to recognise and celebrate Matariki - the Maori New Year - will be held in Auckland until 12
July.
Maori have traditionally celebrated the rising of Matariki by lamenting those who have passed on and by welcoming the
new season with festivities.
This year, a programme of visual arts, dance, music, fashion, education, observations, planting and other festivities
has been organised by Maori with the support of Auckland City Council.
Some highlights of the Matariki 2003 programme include: 2 week programme at Auckland City central and community
libraries a visual arts exhibition, to be held at Auckland City's Artstation 17 June - 12 July a Matariki Ball, the
Viaduct Basin June 21 Stardome Observatory: a special night of speakers, music and kai 24June with the Planetarium show
‘Mana Whetu’ until 4 July Heart Music showcase at the Kiwi tavern 10 July and at The Grand Hotel 12 July.
Auckland City Community Arts co ordinator Stephen Bradshaw says; “ Each year Matariki grows in public awareness and this
is reflected in a culturally rich programme of events.”
Matariki 2003 organisers believe the programme of events will provide a creative exploration of the past while fostering
cultural understanding for the future.
