Auckland’s growth strategy still open for discussion
Auckland City Development Committee will conduct a workshop for councillors and community board planning representatives
on managing the future growth of Auckland city.
This follows a major report, “How Should Auckland Grow?”, tabled at the committee’s meeting today (Friday, 6 June 2003).
The report, which reveals that Auckland city’s population is growing faster than first predicted, highlights the need
for more intensive housing or “compact city forms” for town centres recommended for priority development: CBD,
Newmarket, Glen Innes, Panmure, Mt Wellington Quarry, Otahuhu, Avondale.
City Development Committee chairperson Councillor Juliet Yates says a presentation on the plan will also be made to the
Auckland Regional Council.
Feedback will then be discussed by the committee in July prior to the report being referred to the full City Council.
“Areas capable of accepting growth will be widely consulted before any changes are made to the district plan,” says
Councillor Yates. “Ideas for managing the city’s growth are still open for discussion.”
