Matiatia ferry passenger terminal: Work can now start!
Auckland City announced today that the construction of the temporary ticket office and shelter at the end of Matiatia
wharf will start on Wednesday, 4 June 2003.
The tender winner Robert Cunningham Construction Ltd is currently finalising all site preparation details for a start
next week.
The waiting area and ticket office space will be reduced but passengers should not suffer major inconvenience from this
first construction phase as the new location of the temporary ticket office will be more convenient (ie: close to the
ferry). Existing covered walkways will be kept clear for pedestrians.
Only courier and freight type vehicles will be allowed access to the freight area at the head of the wharf. Courier
vehicles will only be allowed access onto the wharf during periods when the vessel is not berthed and pedestrians have
cleared the wharf.
In order to start work at the end of the wharf, alternative mobility parking spaces will be provided near to the old
wharf (which will replace the existing spaces).
The next construction phase will be the removal of the existing building to be relocated to Tawaipareira. It is being
donated to the community board by Fullers Group Ltd.
The upgraded terminal will provide better facilities and comfort for passengers and will include:
- large covered waiting areas (inside and outside) for passengers and those waiting to welcome people
- full cover from the road to the ferries
- upgraded ticketing amenities and concession opportunities
- public toilets
- coast guard and first aid rooms
- freight handling facilities.
